Sherborne locks

It’s a real privilege to be the locksmith for St Johns Almshouse in Sherborne Dorset, it is always great to fit/fix or service the locks on or within this beautiful building built in the 15th Century which is now home to elderly residents.

 Interesting facts apart from the splendour of the building are the remarkable 15th century Triptych, copies of the illuminated Royal Licence and Foundation Deed,  and an original letter dated 1594 from Sir Walter Raleigh to the Almshouse Master.

Just a few paces away is Sherborne Abbey which really is worth a visit.

Founded by St. Aldhelm in AD 705, the Abbey has developed from Saxon Cathedral to the worshipping heart of a Monastic Community, and finally, to one of the most beautiful of England’s parish churches. For many it is still the ‘cathedral of Dorset’, and our Benedictine heritage lives on in the daily offering of prayer and praise. Sherborne Abbey is one of only 18 churches awarded 5 stars in Simon Jenkins’ England’s Thousand Best Churches.

Locksmithing in and around Dorset really has its perks for me, not only seeing some of these old locks dotted all over the county some still in great working order but I also get to often service or replace broken parts which have to be made by hand just like back in the day by craftsman.

Although Some locks are simplistic in operation others can be equally challenging but always a pleasure and a change from the norm.
